So what is STUDIO: the line?

Welcome to Alfred University’s Art Foundations Studio: The Line Blog. (yikes, that’s a mouthful!) Our motto is:

Explore,   Observe,   Collect,  Analyze,  Edit,   Organize,  Communicate.

STUDIO Research or The Line is an innovative six-week course for first semester art students at Alfred University that uses a ‘line’ across the Village of Alfred as a place for physical and intellectual investigation. The students explore this 5 foot by 1 mile line that crosses the village, touches the two universities, runs smack through the middle of their studio and winds up in the dense forest. Granted, it’s a rugged walk… with mud, obstacles, beauty, adventure and even a good bit of learning and inspiration!

Students create blogs that chart their progress, ideas and projects. Links to the blogs are on the front page (alongside the assignments). At the end of the course, students produce a public event, titled “Defining the Line.”

Studio Research is taught by professors Brett Hunter and Michelle Illuminato.
